OBJECTIVES
Students will learn about perspective – zoom in versus zoom out.
Students will observe and discuss macro and micro elements in art.
Students will apply the idea of macro to micro, zoom in and zoom out, to their everyday world.
 
KEY QUESTIONS
1. What do you see when you zoom out?  Name the objects.  Do these objects work together?
2. What do you see when you zoom in?  Name the object(s).  Describe.  Does this look different or the same from zooming out?

ACTIVITY
Zoomy!  Collect some interesting objects in a basket such as seashells, feathers, bark or twigs, moss or sand.  Have each student choose one object.  Using a zoomy (a digital microscope with a USB port) and your computer, zoom in close to these objects.  Do you see patterns, colors or texture?  Describe what you see.  Now, draw with crayon or colored pencil on a piece of paper what you see on the screen.  After you have completed your drawing, look through a magazine to find a picture of the place or environment where your object comes from (i.e. a seashell comes from the ocean, bark comes from a tree or forest.). Glue this picture next to or on the opposite side of the paper where you have drawn the detail of your object.  You have zoomed in and zoomed out! If you do not have a zoomy, you can complete this project with a magnifying glass or just by looking at something very closely.
