ACTIVITY
Give students various colors of sidewalk chalk. Ask them to draw lines and arrows on the sidewalk to the entrance of the Mattress Factory, school, playground or house. These lines will guide visitors inside. Ask students to follow their classmate's lines and see where they lead. Do the lines help them? What kinds of lines does everyone draw? What colors do they choose?
BONUS
Using a projector, focus an image from everyday life (of a building, bunch of balloons, bridge, etc.) onto a large sheet of paper taped to the wall. Give several students each a different color marker (crayon, pencil or colored masking tape) and ask them to trace the lines they see. Feel free to overlap lines and use the entire paper. Once the students are finished tracing the lines, turn the projector off to view the paper. What kind of lines do you see? Do they lines overlap, intersect and repeat? Does the overlapping/intersecting/repetition change how your eyes see the lines? Is it easier to look at one line, or at the whole picture?
